Christiana Figueres Live Press Briefing: "Why The Climate Fight Is Far From Over" 14.00

“Has the world given up on fighting climate change?” The New York Times recently asked. It might look that way, as US president Donald Trump blusters about fossil fuel, Bill Gates prioritizes children’s health over climate protection, and oil and gas companies plan decades of higher production. But that’s far from the whole picture. The overwhelming majority of the world’s people — 80 to 89%, as Covering Climate Now partner newsrooms have been reporting — want stronger climate action. Clean energy technologies are attracting twice as much investment as fossil fuels, and solar power and regenerative agriculture are surging across the Global South.

Hear more from Christiana Figueres, a founding partner of the nongovernmental organization Global Optimism. In 2015, at another apparently dark moment, Figueres led the process that secured the landmark Paris Agreement. She’ll take questions from reporters (both in person in Belem and online) about how and why the climate fight can still be won. CCNow’s co-founder and executive director, Mark Hertsgaard will moderate.
