Based on their individual spatial planning systems, Alpine countries and regions have developed various tools and instruments to safeguard open spaces and reduce land take. They play an important role in implementing sustainable spatial development. In order to enable transnational exchange and learning on that matter, the Academy for Territorial Development in the Leibniz Association (ARL), the Interreg Alpine Space project “OpenSpaceAlps”, and the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, Regional Development and Energy; Department of Regional Planning (StMWi) have joint forces. Together we are hosting an international conference on sustainable spatial planning in the Alpine Space:

Our goals are to

• define the main challenges in safeguarding open spaces and reducing land take,
• exchange “good practices” and innovative approaches that contribute to a sustainable planning and space efficient development of built-up land and infrastructure and
• define thematic priorities for the transnational “AlpPlan” alpine spatial planning network.

An important part of the conference is the presentation and discussion of “good practices” from the Alpine Space. Therefore, we invite practitioners and experts in the field to contribute “good practices” on different tools and instruments considering the following subjects:

•  safeguarding, connecting and enhancing open/green spaces
• integrating the qualities of green infrastructure in land-use and landscape planning decisions
• avoiding settlement sprawl and achieving compact settlement structures by prioritising and supporting brownfield development
• enhancing inter-municipal cooperation in land-use planning and other related fields of action (e.g. development of commercial/industrial areas)
• information and awareness-raising activities for planners, municipalities, citizens, etc.
• planning and developing infrastructure in an integrated way that coordinates settlement and infrastructure planning

Contributions of max. one page can be submitted until the 31st of May 2021 via E-mail at seitz@arl-net.de 

The Contributions should contain:

• a description of the “good practice”
• information on the planning level and the area of intervention
• results of the implementation and their transferability

The contributions received will be reviewed and selected by the organizers. The selected contributors will be informed about the result of the selection process by June 30, 2021. Accommodation and travel expenses of contributors willing to present their selected good practice example will be sponsored.
